Week 5 - GVRL

      Advanced Challenge:

      1. Put in Spring Holidays and got 422 results. I then narrowed it down by doing an Advanced Search after the time period 2011
clicking on Subject Area - Education and Target Audience - General. The best resource turned out to be Junior Worldmark
Encyclopedia of World Holidays. I found information on Carnival (Mardi Gras), Buddha Day, and Easter. Found games and food but
not sure the actual recipes could be found on this site.  Did find a
resource on May Day but it was very brief.

     2. Searched for articles on Common Core Standards and got
475 results. Narrowed it down by clicking on Teacher Education
on the left hand side and came up with 24.

Overall this site has some worthwhile resources. I would definitily use it with older high school students. Once you get the hang of navigating it gets easier to find your information. I can see
if you a limited Reference section this would be beneficial since it
has so many encyclopedia and dictionary sources.

 Common Core Connection:

Put in Creativity and from Speech and Theater Education read an article which said, " College admissions personnel have identified speaking, listening and critical thinking as skills and knowledge crucial to success. Competence in oral communication -
speaking, listening, and media literacy - is prereuisite to student's
personal and academic success in life."  This is exactly what the Common Core Standards stress as goals to prepare for students for further education and beyond in life.

An article from The Encyclopedia of Education on Cooperative
and Collaborative Learning said, "One perspective would suggest
that the joint knowledge of the group member is greater than the
individual knowledge of any member. This again is a goal of the
Common Core. Ex. Speaking and Listening Standards 6-12
Comprehension and Collaboration: 1. Initate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in
groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 11-12
topics, texts, and issues, building on other's ideas and expressing
their own clearly and persuasively.

Speaking and Listening Standard 11-12: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas #5 Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in
presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest.
In small groups 2-3 Senior students will research a topic using
two different articles from GVRL. One they will have read to them
with the Listen option and one they will read themselves. They will
then design a brochure advertising the benefit of one over the other.

  1. Love the articles & lesson you did for Common Core!! Good finds and good thinking. Thanks for your work on #'s 1 & 2. For #1, you could find recipes in Gale in the Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Foods and Recipes of the World. You're right, this is for grades 5 through adult, and can be a good teacher resource as well.
