SIRS Issue Re
I researched the topic Animal Cruelty which brought up 421 newspaper articles, 217 maganzine articles, 10 viewpoints ( which
I'm not sure would be that useful), 2 Reference articles, 103 Graphic, Media sources ( might be useful for Powerpoints), and
13 Web Sites. After scrolling through the newspaper and magazine
articles I was impressed enough to recommend this as another alternative to Proquest. It is something I would definitely recommend to students.
The Pro/Con Issues and Essential Questions feature would be an excellent source for Debate students as would the Debate Guide under the My Analysis tab. Also the Creating Powerpoint Presentations would be a fun resource for students and teachers alike. There was a Citation Guidelines which as always is invaluable. The Timeline feature was very easy to use and the
Statistics could be very useful for both research papers and
speeches.
I was not as impressed with the Curriculum Pathfinder feature.
Maybe it was just me but I did not find it that userfriendly. I chose
Mythology to research. There was definitely a lot of information but again I did not find it easy to navigate.
Common Core Connection
Speaking and Listening 9-10: Presentation of Knowledge and
Ideas. Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and task.
In doing research for Informational speeches students will be required to use the Note Organizer format on SIRS Issue Reseacher to organize their research.

Good work, library researcher! We recommend SIRS Issues Researcher as a starting point for MS-HS students, and if they need more, they can go to ProQuest. In fact, we know of a couple masters’ level students who found exactly what they needed in SIRS Issues Researcher!
ReplyDeleteMy feeling is that Curriculum Pathfinders is an option to find supplemental material, mostly interactive websites, and is used more by teachers than students.
Your Common Core connection is good. We look forward to your comments on SIRS Discoverer. Even though that is for lower grades, there may be features you can use, or you may know people in your personal life who may like to know about it.
